“Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.  After enlightenment, chop wood carry water.” To bring all of yourself to daily tasks creates a wholeness that we oftentimes miss within ourselves.  Feeling broken into a thousand tasks and thoughts at once is an overwhelming plague to which so many of us are falling victim.  To be truly in the moment with the task at hand, brings us mindfulness, mind/body connection, and the gift of the moment.  Appreciate this moment, for you will never have it again.

This class offers a slow paced day filled with opportunity to be fully in the moment and mindful only of that which you are doing, but it also will offer incredible skill building.  These are essential skills to the human species, slowly being lost with modern conveniences but missed deeply within our deeper longing.

You will learn to properly chop wood for indoor or outdoor fires from beginning to end using splitting axe, hatchet, and knife.  You will then learn basic matchless fire building skills as to how to properly arrange and stack the wood as well as utilizing feather sticks that you carve and dry material. You will then help bring the fire to life using only the Ferro rod and camp knife.

Once our fire is established, we will journey into the back woods on a plant walk and gather our own water from a natural spring fed woodland stream.  We will then return it back to our fire to make a lovely Taiwanese Oolong Tea.  The walk, the water gathering, and the forest reconnection will all be intentional.

After minimally filtering, we will boil our water over the fire to purify it before brewing our tea.   We will make pots of tea together around the fire that we built appreciating the subtle complexities of the tea  as well as how it represents taking pleasure in the simple things.

This class can be wonderful for anyone looking not only to reconnect with the moment, but also looking to reconnect to ancient and vital skills that are quickly being lost.
