Description

Using three fundamental hand tools of spoon carving; the hatchet, sloyd knife and hook knife, we will design and craft a wooden cooking spoon as functional as it is beautiful. Beginning with a spoon blank, a chunk of wood also known as a billet, we will discuss and draw spoon design straight onto wood, axe it out using the hatchet, and bring the one of a kind spoon shape out using the two knives. In this class, we will cover proper and safe axe skills, carving techniques, and functional design elements.  We will also have a relaxed environment to chat about all things spoon carving while we are crafting including most suitable woods for spoon carving, sharpening techniques, wooden treen (wooden utensil) maintenance, and any other questions that may arise.

Skill level and prerequisites: Intermediate class, not for beginners.  Prerequisite: my Spoon Carving 101 class, Carving a Butter Spreader class, or at minimum some experience with sharp hand tools, basic knife skills and some prior attempts at wood carving with hand tools in some manner.
