Teaching Herbalism Through Tea Craft

I focused this respiratory blend on the lower respiratory system (bronchioles, airways, lungs) with consideration of what “type” of cough is present. In herbalism, a cough isn’t simply a cough. Is it dry, wet, or irritated? A dry cough (which this blend is focused on) is one where “dryness” is an issue so there is congestion but the needed moisture isn’t present to allow expectoration of the sputum. Another words, the mucous needs to be moistened and thinned so that it can come up. You may have this type of cough if you cough and feel like something needs to come up but it doesn’t often enough. When it does, it is thick and chunky. This blend focuses on moistening those dry tissues while bringing in expectorant herbs to help the body expel the sputum that is now more moveable and thinned. It also focuses on moistening those dry tissues so as to not lead to an irritated and overly inflamed state.

I included the following: PEPPERMINT- aromatically decongesting and soothing. ELECAMPANE-one of my favorite all time expectorant herbs because it can work with a cough no matter what type it is! HYSSOP- gentle expectorant herb while also offering some antiviral properties. VIOLET LEAF- moistening lung tonic while also being a lymphatic tonic. The lymph system needs to help move out cellular debris from fighting illness. MARSHMALLOW ROOT- very moistening and mucilogenous herb to soothe tissues and help thin the thick mucous. COLTSFOOT- powerful expectorant herb. MULLEIN- gentle expectorant herb that is also soothing to tissues since it is a demulscent herb.

{Other types of coughs: Wet cough- coughing lots with lots of sputum. The sputum is typically thin and stringy often white or clear. There is too much mucous and drying up the excess could be helpful. The tea we make to aid the body in this battle is Breathe Drying.

Irritated Cough- When the body has dealt with an upper or lower respiratory tract infection be it bacterial or viral, the tissues are often inflamed and irritated even after the “main event” is over. It is a often seen as a lingering cough when you should be feeling better. The cough is irritable, dry and very little ever comes up. If anything does come up, it is usually stringy, white, or clear. This tissue needs soothing and anti inflammatory herbs to aid in calming the irritated tissues. The best teas we make to aid the body in this battle is Porcupine and Breathe Soothing. }

Our Packaging

Our packaging is intentionally minimal and environmentally conscious.  The kraft bags holding our teas are recycled and compostable.  The inner lining is plant based and the outer layer is FDA approved recycled natural Kraft. Tin tie closures need to be removed prior to sending it to compost heap.

Our unbleached tea bags are sealed with a food grade staple and no chemical sealant.  Each is compostable, as well as the herbs inside, once staple is removed.  They love to return to the earth.

We are constantly seeking ways we can do better and lessen our impact.
