Teaching Herbalism Through Tea Craft

I created this blend for if I or my family got sick with the immune challenges of 2020. I certainly cannot claim to be trying to treat COVID… there’s so much I do not know and isn’t known about this brand new disease. Besides, I’m not a licensed medical professional and herbs are not drugs. But, what I am is a plant wisdom keeper and we have seen illness. Herbs know how to support us and specific body systems. I put together to some incredible herbal allies that seemed to me would have a lot to share right now.

In this process, I added honeysuckle because of its long history of help and several studies showing it to be a viral disruptor and lovely immune supportive tonic. It is also noted to be soothing to inflamed tissues as well as the respiratory tract. I then wanted to be sure to add in diaphoretic herbs to support the body’s fever and “open the vents” as well. I added Yarrow because, not only is it a diaphoretic, but it also is supportive to mucous membranes as well. Following Yarrow I added Ginger root because of its diaphoretic properties as well as its ability to support the opening of nasal passages, help the body get its blood moving best and it offers wonderful digestive support. Similar yet different, I added in peppermint also bringing these properties. The lungs are very important to consider so I invited in Hyssop as a long standing elder in the respiratory tonic world and Violet leaf as a respiratory and mucous membrane soother as well as lymphatic tonic. The lymph system needing so much support during illness, and after of course. Barberry root was an easy choice because of its history in our tradition as an antibacterial, liver tonic and “heat” clearing herb. Elderberry, with its lovely antiviral and antioxidant offering was a must just as was Stinging Nettle leaf to offer the body much needed nourishment during this process. I wanted to add one last antibacterial and lung tonic punch so Thyme was my next addition. Not only is it wonderful to help the lungs clear themselves but the steam coming from the cup containing the oils of thyme help the sinuses battle bacteria as well so be sure to breathe this tea in! The last addition was cinnamon for its synergistic effects to bring this brew together. Much thought, years of study, love and intention went into creating this blend. May it bring you and yours much needed wellness and strength.
