A respiratory system supportive blend just for the little ones who are feeling under the weather and need help breathing a little easier. Made by me, a mom and clinical level herbalist.
Purpose: This brew contains gentle yet powerful respiratory system tonic herbs appropriate for children to help their little system kick out invaders and soothe sinus, bronchial, and lung tissues. If I hear my son coughing, I'm making him this tea.
Pick me if: You want to have a blend on hand for if a respiratory virus hits the home and your child needs support.
Flavor profile: herbaceous but smooth and minty. Created with the child's palette in mind.
Organic Ingredients: Spearmint leaf, Marshmallow root, Mullein leaf, Hyssop aerials, Wild Cherry bark, Rosehips, Thyme Caffeine Free
Understanding the Ingredients: It seems that every bug that goes around ends up landing in little one’s respiratory tract one way or another. Ive had lots of practice over the years with blending up teas for the tiny ones. Here’s the most comprehensively helpful tea that I have come up with over time. SPEARMINT- I chose this mint because of its sweetness that can help cover up some of the more intense flavors in this brew. Spearmint also helps to aromatically open the pipes. MARSHMALLOW ROOT is the most soothing herb I know to the respiratory tract so whether the issue is thick mucous, irritated tissues, or inflammation, this herb knows how to help. MULLEIN is a well rounded but gentle respiratory herb great for congestion in the sinuses, bronchial and lungs. It helps the body get the gunk out all the while soothing irritated tissues with its demulscent properties. HYSSOP is a gently powerful antiviral expectorant herb I call upon often for making sure things don’t stick around in the little lungs. WILD CHERRY BARK has a very long history of tending to every respiratory symptoms from whooping cough to the croup to respiratory infections. I can’t say that this herb treats any of these things, but I can say that folks have called upon it repeatedly for 100s of years for good reason. ROSEHIPS are delicious, packed with Vitamin C and antiinflammatory so they are a must have in any children’s tea. THYME is the last ingredient that I hesitantly add because of flavor, but know that I must because of effect. I love this herb for respiratory issues needing to help dry up excess and move it along. Strongly antibacterial, expectorant, and mildly antiviral this common cooking spice is anything but basic.
Not your ordinary teabag: Our hand-made teabags are large since they are a full portion to provide you with the intended benefit and desired support. Each one may be re-steeped several times throughout the day. The brewed tea may also be saved in the fridge over night and enjoyed chilled the following day. They are each handcrafted in perfect measurement within a microplastic free teabag and hand stapled with a stainless steel staple. This is slow craft herbalism with care.
{10 pack is 2.1oz and 3 pack is .63oz }
Loose leaf or bagged are both created in very small batches in our woodland teahouse from thoughtfully sourced ingredients and professionally formulated by Leah, owner and clinical herbalist.
HOW TO BREW:
Bagged: Use 1 tea bag per 16 oz of 185 ºF water. Begin drinking when temperature is comfortable but never remove tea bag.
Loose Leaf: Use 1-1.5 Tb per 16 oz of 185 ºF water and steep a minimum of 20 minutes.
The longer these herbs steep the more potent the herbal infusion will be. Add sweetness if you prefer.
For children 6 months - 1 year: Offer ½-1 oz tea diluted (or not) every 2-3 hours.
1 - 5 years : Offer 3-4 oz every 2-3 hours diluted (or not).
5+ years : 4-6 oz every 2-3 hours.
Can refrigerate for up to 2 days.
Home Remedies that may be helpful- If there is sinus congestion, I like to do a sinus steam by placing 1Tb of our Sinus Steam blend in a tall coffee mug, covering it with boiled steaming water half way up the mug, and holding it under the child's nose for 5ish minutes allowing them to breathe in the steam but being very careful that they are not burned by the water or mug. This steam carries antibacterial properties and decongesting benefits. I also really like child appropriate olive leaf or propolis saline nasal sprays to keep bacteria flushed.
For a deep cough, I make an onion chest compress by heating onions just enough to get the scent flowing then place them in a cheesecloth and tie into a pack shape. Place the pack on their chest assuring it's not hot enough to burn them. Leave on for at least 10 minutes allowing them to smell the steam.
If a cough is spastic and they can't seem to catch their breath, an in-the-moment trick is to either run a steamy shower and let them breathe in the steam or open the freezer and let them breathe in the cold air.
Please note- if a cough worsens or is accompanied by a fever, consult your physician.
Earth first packaging: Our packaging is intentionally minimal and environmentally conscious. The kraft bags holding our teas are 100% recycled and backyard compostable. Our teabags are compostable, as well as the herbs inside, once the staple is removed. They love to return to the earth. We are constantly seeking ways we can do better and lessen our impact.
